TL;DR I’ve spent the past few years working toward financial freedom for myself. I finally feel like I’m getting to a steady place, and I’m celebrating by joining the Women Belong team in a Habitat for Humanity project. We’re building a home for a woman in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago. Please donate to our team so we can help other women achieve financial freedom too!
I’ve run my own business for almost 9 years, but it wasn’t until recently that I feel confident in my financial sustainability.
The first 5 years of my business, I didn’t really have to worry about sustainability because I was married to someone who made enough to support both of us. During our separation, I had the sinking realization that to truly support myself I would have to double what my business had historically made. It took me 3 more years of trying one business idea after the next to figure out how to do that. And 2 years of implementing Sexy Dashboards until now, when I finally feel like I can exhale and cruise.
The Power of Financial Freedom
I can’t even explain how freeing this feeling is. Especially after watching my savings shrink month after month, wondering how the hell I was ever going to turn it around. It was hard to even think straight or prioritize the things that truly matter – like spending time with my niblings and taking care of my body. And not doing those things compounded the problem, spiraling into anxiety, depression, and further financial issues. Not to mention the negative effects of prolonged stress on the body.
I’m lucky. I had so much support from loved ones, a solid meditation practice, and a badass financial planner.
I’m at a new horizon now. The air is clearer. My choices feel abundant. I love the work I do and the people I work with. (Shout out to my morning meditation crew and my amazing clients!)
I want to make sure all people have this freedom – the freedom of financial sustainability. Freedom from the panic of not knowing when money will run out.
Especially people that have historically been most denied this freedom. Women. Black Women. Indigenous Women. Trans and Nonbinary People. I am committed to this.
Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.

Passing it On
When I saw my Women Belong networking community was hosting a Women Build edition of Habitat for Humanity, I signed up immediately. I knew that home ownership can be a game changer for a person’s financial sustainability. And there’s data to back that up. (Ya data!!)
My team and I are going to spend October 22 building a home for a woman in the Pullman neighborhood of Chicago. The home recipient will be there, as well as other Women Build teams. By the end of October they will get the keys to their brand new home.
500+ women building together. F*ck Ya!
I’m so excited to celebrate my financial sustainability this way.
